THE SPIRIT OF BAYANIHAN

The Bayanihan (pronounced as buy-uh-nee-hun) is a Filipino custom derived from a Filipino word “bayan”, which means nation, town or community. The term bayanihan itself literally means “being in a bayan”, which refers to the spirit of communal unity, work and cooperation to achieve a particular goal.

An example is when the town’s people are asked especially the men to lend a hand to a family who will move into a new place. The relocation does not only involve moving the family’s personal belongings but most importantly it concerns the transfer of the family’s entire house to a new location.

OPM was launched with a mission to create a sustainble symbiotic relationship between two important segments of Philippine society –farmers and OFWs. They knew the financial capacity of OFWs to spend, and potentially to invest, and they anticipated that many farmers are eager for a chance at better production and improved livelihoods.

With the persistent push of the seed mangers, the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Trade and Industry in region XIII, where OPM farms and office stand, extended in-kind support through cacao production training sponsorship and distribution of farm materials for cacao production. Most barangay captains are also cooperative in pooling their farmers to receive training proper training on cacao production.
